Providence Island is one of Monrovia’s most important historical landmarks and is widely recognized as a symbolic birthplace of Liberia. Located at the meeting point of the Mesurado River and Stockton Creek, this small, guitar-shaped island offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with Liberia’s history and cultural heritage. The island is traditionally known as Dozoa, meaning “Land in the Center of Water,” and was once an important Gola trading site.
