Providence Island is one of Monrovia’s most important historical landmarks and is widely recognized as a symbolic birthplace of Liberia. Located at the meeting point of the Mesurado River and Stockton Creek, this small, guitar-shaped island offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with Liberia’s history and cultural heritage. The island is traditionally known as Dozoa, meaning “Land in the Center of Water,” and was once an important Gola trading site. On January 1, 1822, freed African Americans from the United States landed here, marking a significant moment in Liberia’s history. Visitors can explore historic landmarks including the ancient Cotton Tree, old stone well, historic foundations, heritage markers, and a traditional-style palaver hut. The island is also crossed by the Gabriel Tucker Bridge, providing convenient access from central Monrovia.
